3:05 Royal Ascot
The 3:05 is the Group 1 Commonwealth Cup. A race for the 3 year-old colts over the 6f trip.
I find it hard to get away from SHADOW OF LIGHT (15/8) in this. The Champion 2 year-old of last season made a highly encouraging return to action in the 2000 Guineas, finishing third where he just gave in late to the stronger stayers. The mile trip just stretched him there at that level, and returning to 6f looks ideal. I think he could be top class over this trip and he can show that today.
3:40 Royal Ascot
Next up is the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes, a trappy handicap over the 1m4f trip.
The one for me is HAND OF GOD (15/2). An impressive winner here at Royal Ascot last year when bolting up in the Sandy Gates in taking fashion. He’s only been seen once since that victory, and that was in May of this year. He was well beaten there on reappearance, but you can be sure he’d have needed that outing, and he can come forward now. He’ll relish the fast ground as he did last season and the extra 2f trip should hold no fears. He could prove to be better than a handicapper.
4:20 Royal Ascot
The feature is the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, a Group 1 for the fillies on the round mile.
The one for me is FALAKEYAH (5/2) for the Owen Burrows yard. Unbeaten in two starts, she looked a future star when bolting up at Newmarket in May, where she made all and stayed on strongly despite racing keenly out in front. That was over 1m2f, but the way she travelled into that race suggests this mile trip could bring out more improvement. I think she’ll improve for getting a lead too, and at this leve,l she should be able to get that. The drop in trip will also help her settle as they’ll naturally be going quicker. I don’t think it’s a strong renewal of the race, and although main market rival Zarigana brings a strong level of form, She’s Perfect didn’t do much for her French Guineas win last weekend, and she can be taken on with the unexposed Falakeyah.
5:35 Royal Ascot
The 5:35 is the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes. A 1m4f contest for 3 year-olds.
I like ZAHRANN (11/2) in this. Unraced at 2, he’s taken significant strides forward in his three starts at 3 this season. He showed eye-catching promise when finishing second in a maiden on his debut in April before following up on his second start in maiden company at Cork. He was then pitched into listed company on just his third career start and duly obliged. He displayed a decent turn of foot to come from last to first despite the fact that he still looked to be learning on the job. That experience will have helped him a lot, and he can take another big step forward here. Ascot should suit well as he’ll likely come from off the pace again, which is often favoured here, and the long home straight will give him plenty of time to get rolling down the outside.
