2:30 Royal Ascot

The opener on Day 2 is the Queen Mary Stakes. A Group 2 contest for the speedy 2-year-old fillies over the 5f trip.

I like SOCIETY KISS (9/1) in here. The Ralph Beckett trained filly was impressive on debut here at Ascot, where she stayed on strongly to clock a decent time over this course and distance. She’s bred to be pretty forward and pretty speed,y so this test looks ideal. The yard’s horses often come on a bundle for their first outing, and we’ve seen that with a lot of their horses this season. If she improves as I’d expect, she ought to go close for Hector Crouch.

3:40 Royal Ascot

The 3:40 is the Group 2 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes for the fillies and mares over the straight mile.

It is RUNNING LION (13/2) for me in here. The winner of this race in 2024, it’s hard to say this year’s renewal is a stronger one. She is a very in and out sort but on a going day, she is certainly Group 1 class. She showed that last season in France when chasing down Friendly Soul in the Group 1 Prix de l’Opera on Arc day. She’s been poor in two runs this season, but returning here with cheekpieces added, I think we will see a much-improved performance. Oisin Murphy takes the ride.

4:20 Royal Ascot

The feature race comes up at 5:20. The Group 1 Prince Of Wales Stakes over the 1m2f trip.

I do find it hard to get away from LOS ANGELES (9/4) in this, who I expect will be well suited by this test. A strong stayer over this trip, Ryan Moore will make plenty of use of him and make this a decent test. He had a really good 3 year-old campaign last season, winning the Irish Derby and finishing third in the Arc. He appears to have returned as good as ever, winning both starts this season, including the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup last time out against the re-opposing Anmaat.

5:00 Royal Ascot

The 5:00 is the competitive Royal Hunt Cup handicap over the straight mile.

I think MY CLOUD (4/1) could be a Group horse in a handicap, and that’s often what is needed to win this type of race. A progressive 3-year-old last season, he returned to action when bolting up over course and distance, showing a really good turn of foot. He was heavily backed that day, suggesting connections knew he had come on a lot over the winter. He followed that up at Newbury off a 10lb higher mark where he won a shade more cosily than the head winning margin suggests. I think this race will bring out further improvement as the quicker they go, the more it’s likely to suit him. A mark of 95 demands more, but I think he’s certainly got that in his locker. Stall 32 will require him to be drawn on the right side, but high is very often the place to be. There’s enough pace in the high numbers to suggest that will be just fine.
