The opener on ITV for the July Cup meeting is the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy Stakes with 6 runners scheduled to go to post for the 1m5f contest. The one I like in here is CASTLE WAY (7/2) NAP for Godolphin. He has a good record here at Newmarket where he finished second on the July Course on debut last season over the mile. He’s got a staying pedigree so that was a good effort and he stepped up to 1m2f on his final start again here at Newmarket where he bolted up. He made his seasonal reappearance again at this track in a listed contest over the same trip and again, he won that comfortably from the front and shown he’s progressed well over the winter. I think he’ll be even better over this extra 3f and he’ll probably get a soft lead out in front. I think he’ll get connections off to a flyer.2:25 Newmarket
Next up at 2:25 is the Kingdom Of Bahrain July Stakes, a Group 2 for the 2 year-olds over the 6f trip. A case can be made for many in this but I do like CHIEF MANKATO (5/1) NB at the prices. He’s only ran the once but it was an impressive victory at Windsor in a race that has had several boosts of form since. He had problems at the stall and was a late withdrawal at Royal Ascot but at least he comes here fresher than most as a result. He stayed on well on debut and I think this stiff finish on the July Course will suit him well. Charlie Hills is having a strong season and he thinks a lot of this horse. William Buick is a positive jockey booking too.3:00 Newmarket
The 3:00 is a wide-open handicap over 6f and 17 runners are set to go to post for it. I don’t think there’s much between the first four home at York last time out but I get the impression we haven’t seen the best of MILL STREAM (9/1) yet and I’m happy to give him a go in this. He was third in that race and he’s only gone up a 1lb. The winner and the second have gone up 5lb and 4lb as a result. I think this track will suit Mill Stream well and Marco Ghiani will have plenty of options from a nice draw of stall 9. He ran a cracker here last season behind Noble Style so the track is no problem and if he improves as much as he did from his seasonal reappearance to his next start, he has to be bang there in this.3.35 Newmarket
The finale on ITV is the Princess of Wales Stakes, a Group 2 over 1m4f. Only 4 runners are set to run. Not the best betting heat of the afternoon but Adayar can be took on at the prices. I think ISRAR (10/3) can run the odds on favourite close at the very least. Israr will likely stalk Adayar into it and come with one effort. He’s ran two solid races this season finishing second on both occasions not beaten far at all on both occasions. He’s a winner over 1m2f so he’s certainly got tactical speed.
