GLORIOUS GOODWOOD SATURDAY TIPS – RACE-BY-RACE PREVIEW
1:20 Goodwood – Coral Glorious Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (4yo+) 1m4f
Rain during the week won’t have helped the chances of a few of these, so with proven soft ground form already in the book, it may pay to side with Charlie Appleby’s
ARABIAN CROWN (6/1).
The Dubawi gelding has proven difficult to train with his career punctuated by absences; however, he’s a smart sort when fit as shown when winning a Group Three at Sandown last campaign, and he shaped as if coming back to the boil when third at Newmarket earlier in the month behind El Cordobes in the Princess Of Wales’s Stakes.
He may just have needed the outing on the back of a break, while Charlie Appleby’s runners at the time weren’t firing on all cylinders, and so he’s not judged too harshly on that performance.
Worth another try at this trip, he handles the softer ground well with two wins in the mud to his name and with the yard in better form now, he can give a good account of himself.
1:55 Goodwood – Coral Summer Handicap (GBBPlus Race) Cl2 (3yo+) 1m6f
SUBSEQUENT (16/1, EW) likely needed his reappearance in the Silver Cup at York earlier in the month, but with that outing firmly under his belt, the Galileo gelding can build on the run and resume winning ways.
A four-time winner last term, which included on soft and heavy ground, he rounded off his campaign when winning the Listed Noel Murless Stakes at Ascot in October, beating Allonsy by two lengths, having earlier won at Newmarket and going close in the Mallard Handicap at Doncaster.
Andrew Balding’s charge failed to deliver any sort of challenge on his reappearance at York, failing to beat a rival home although entitled to need the outing after more than nine months off. That outing shouldn’t be lost on him, however, and he ought to strip much fitter for the run so improvement is expected on the back of that performance.
He ran well here twelve months ago over shorter, but he gets this trip well and will have no issues with the ground. While he’s probably high enough in the weights, he can nevertheless make his presence felt with a big performance.
2:30 Goodwood – Qatar Lillie Langtry Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies & Mares) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m6f
TERM OF ENDEARMENT (7/2) won this twelve months ago when trained by Henry de Bromhead, and now with William Haggas, the Sea The Moon mare can mount a successful title defence.
Making her debut for her new yard at Meydan in April, she ran well despite finishing down the field in the Dubai
Gold Cup, and with that run under her belt, she subsequently found only Scenic too good by a head in the Group Three Bronte Cup at York.
That winner has since placed in a Group Two, and she may have paid the price for going off hard at Sandown latest over two miles, failing to last home behind Coltrane but only beaten by around two lengths.
A drop back to this trip will certainly suit her, and she won on softer ground in the past during her time in Ireland. She’ll likely get a soft lead here, and with plenty seemingly in her favour with the race conditions and proven course form to her name, she can land this prize again for a second year.
3:05 Goodwood – Coral Stewards’ Cup (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f
With changing ground, the draw could be all-important, so it may pay to wait until the day before deciding on any wager.
However,
CIRCE (11/1, EW) could prove the answer in any case to this devilishly tricky sprint handicap, and Richard Hannon’s charge can register another victory.
The Kodiac filly has won three of her last four starts, most recently when beating Rebel Path at Newmarket in June. She had previously won at Newmarket in May and added to her tally at Windsor later the same month before acquitting herself well in defeat at Epsom behind Sondad.
The ground at Epsom was soft, and her winning form has come on quicker ground, so conditions underfoot may be a worry, especially if there’s further rain. However, she has stamina for further than this six furlongs, having won over one mile last term, although she isn’t short of speed either and with this usually run at a frenetic pace, she could have the race run to suit her.
She ran out a ready winner last time out, scoring by two lengths, but while that was in a slightly lesser grade, she is going the right way and could have more to offe,r so this slightly deeper race shouldn’t faze her.
With previous course experience and racing out of a high draw, which recent trends support the notion the far side of the track is the place to be, the booking of Ryan Moore catches the eye and a big run then wouldn’t come as a surprise in this competitive feature.
3:45 Goodwood – Whispering Angel Handicap Cl2 (3yo 0-105) 7f
Another big field to unravel and
SPIRIT OF FARHH (25/1, EW) is chanced to continue the fine week of Eve Johnson Houghton.
A heavy ground winner last term, the Far Above gelding has come on well following his reappearance at Newbury in April, filling the frame in starts at Salisbury and Sandown prior to regaining the winning thread at Newmarket latest when getting the better of Waiting All Night.
He had bumped into one at Salisbury earlier in the campaign in Stanhope Gardens who went on to run well in both the Epsom Derby and York Stakes; while he was beaten by a subsequent winner at Sandown so he boasts some solid form.
He may be slightly more exposed than some of these, but he comes here on the back of a confidence-boosting win and will handle any softer conditions as well as having proven his stamina for the trip. A low draw could be a concern, and he does take a step up in class, which are slight worries; however, given the yard has been amongst the winners this week, he could be worth chancing to post a big run.
4:20 Goodwood – British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (IRE Incentive Race) (Colts & Geldings) Cl2 (2yo) 7f
LION OF ALBA (18/1, EW) shaped quite well on his debut at Newbury in June, finishing fifth behind A Bit Of Sprit but clearly in need of the experience. Slowly away from the stalls she ran green early at the back of the field before the penny dropped and she ran on well in the latter stages.
That form looks useful, the winner has gone in again since as well as make the frame at Listed level, while the third has won both his subsequent outings including a Listed contest at Ascot.
This will certainly be a bit more of a challenge for Hugo Palmer’s charge, but he’s entitled to come on a bundle for that initial experience, while he should handle softer ground given they made quite a print in ground described as good at Newbury.
In the hope he’ll improve for his debut the Too Darn Hot colt can step up on that eye-catching performance and give a good account in what should be an informative contest.
4:55 Goodwood – Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-95) 1m1f
The finale to the 2025 Glorious Goodwood Festival sees another tricky handicap puzzle go to post and bring the curtain down on the summer feature and BOYFRIEND (9/1) could prove the answer for Richard Hannon.
The Twilight Son gelding made the frame here last May, going down by just a half-length behind Queen’s Reign having met with some trouble in running. Several winners have since come out of that race and he has continued his progress this campaign, winning at Nottingham in June and finishing a good fourth behind reopposing Dutch Decoy at Newmarket when last seen.
He was only beaten one length there, but he was giving the winner 12lbs and that form was boosted by the winner striking again at that venue next time out. The pair now reoppose with Richard Hannon’s charge enjoying a 10lbs pull for the narrow margin of victory and the lightly-raced sort could still have further improvement to come.
This extra furlong should be within range and he’s a previous soft ground winner so conditions won’t prove an issue. Assuming the additional yardage doesn’t catch him out then he could go close with Ryan Moore doing the steering on the four-year-old.
