1:20 Ascot
The first race from ITV is a maiden hurdle over 2m5f and the favourite stands out for me here. I just can’t see how EVERGLOW loses this race. His form last time out in a Group 2 finishing behind the exciting Star Gate. He was highly tried on debut which suggests connections think a lot of him and he’s easily better than this lot in my book.1:35 Navan
We head to Navan for one race today and it’s a decent Grade 2 Novice Hurdle over the intermediate trip of 2m4f. I really like HOLYMACAPONY NAP here. I was really impressed with his rules debut last time out at Punchestown where he hosed up by 8l. He travelled and jumped well that day and looked really at home on the soft ground. He gets them conditions again today and I think he has more to come. I expect Blackmore to set the fractions from the front and I think this horse has a little more class and speed than his main rivals and can utilise that here.1:55 Ascot
Back to Ascot we go for a wide open 2m Handicap Chase contest. It’s a short but select field and truth be told, you wouldn’t be surprised if any of the runners managed to get their head in front here. The one I’ve landed on is MACK THE MAN. He finished second last time out behind Hitman who went on to finish a gallant second in a Grade 1 next time out behind Allmankind. That was his first run of the season and I think he’ll come on a lot for that. The ground conditions will hold no fears and I think he has scope to prove better than his current handicap mark.2:30 Ascot
The feature comes at 2:30 and it is the Grade 2 SkyBet Supreme Trial Novices Hurdle over 2m. It is disappointing we don’t get to see the exciting Dusart line up here. Henderson has chosen to run No Ordinary Joe instead which many will take as a tip in itself. The one I like is LLANDINABO LAD NB. He is the solid horse for me is this line up and I was taken with his win last time out at Haydock. He powered clear that day to win well and I certainly don’t think they were mugs in behind. Johnson keeps the ride and the recent rain will definitely be in this horses favour. Trainer Tom Symonds is in rude form and can’t do much wrong at the moment.3:05 Ascot
The final race on the ITV coverage comes at 3:05 and it is an intriguing Novice Chase over 2m4f. Pic D’Orhy heads the market and he certainly has potential to be a high level chaser but his jumping on both Chase starts has left more questions than answers. The one I’ve landed on is ALLART. I think it’s quite telling that Henderson sends him straight into a Grade 2 first time out chasing which suggests he thinks a lot of the course and schooling must have went well. The horse certainly has the class to compete after finishing fifth in a top-quality Supreme Novices hurdle back in March.
