2:10 Cheltenham

The 2:10 is the Arkle Trophy, a 2m Grade 1 for the Novice Chase. They look certain to go very quick with Magic Daze set to go from the front. The one I’ve landed on is COUER SUBLIME EW (14/1). Like I said, they are going to go very fast in this which will suit the strong travellers that like to sit off the pace. Couer Sublime will relish that here and he will appreciate the spring ground for the first time this season. He ran a cracker on seasonal debut when beaten 4l by Ferny Hollow who would have been odds on for this. He disappointed over Christmas, like many of De Bromhead’s horses before regaining his confidence with a good victory last time out at Gowran Park. That was off the back of wind surgery and he seemed to really benefit from that. He is the choice of last years Leading Jockey Rachael Blackmore and I think he’s a fantastic each way bet. Hopefully he can get up the hill but even so, he should hit the frame at a nice price.

2:50 Cheltenham

The first handicap of the week comes up next, the Ultima Handicap Chase. 24 runners are set to line-up for this stamina test over 3m1f. The selection here is CORACH RAMBLER EW (12/1). A horse full of ability but has his own way of doing things, I think he’s capable of going very close of a handicap mark of 140. He fell 4 out last time out at Ascot behind favourite Does He Know but I think he would have went very close at the very least in that contest. His best career performance to date came here at Cheltenham so a return to this track is a huge plus and he’ll be staying on strongly over this trip. I’m just hoping he can hold his position early as he will need to cut out the mistakes. However, I’m happy to chance him at the prices in a wide open renewal as usual.

4:50 Cheltenham

The 4:50 from Cheltenham is the trickiest race of the day for punters, the Boodles Juveniles Hurdle, known too many as the Fred Winter. Another race ran over 2m where plenty are expected to improve on what we’ve seen already and exploit their lenient handicap marks. Gaelic Warrior could be so well I’m off 129 but the price has gone now. I’ll chance HMS SEAHORSE EW (12/1) in this. The shrewd Paul Nolan has been plotting the selection for this all season I feel. He’s had one winner from one runner in this race over the years so hopefully he can continue that 100% record here. A fairly useful horse on the flat for top trainer Aiden O’Brien, he’s improved with every start over hurdles finishing with a decent victory last time out at Fairyhouse. He’ll appreciate the strong gallop and the good ground and he’s opened to significant improvement. Nice each way price.
