1:20 Goodwood – Coral Chesterfield Cup Handicap Cl2 (4yo+) 1m2f

ANCIENT ROME (12/1, EW) won this race two years ago off a higher mark and it might be worth chancing Charlie Hills’ charge to get back on the scoresheet returning to this venue for the first time since. The War Front gelding struck in this race on his debut for the trainer, having been a smart sort in France when trained by Andre Fabre, and he followed up his victory here when landing a valuable race at Kentucky, after which he was largely contested in Pattern company in races in Europe, the Emirates and the USA. His first couple of runs this term saw him cut little ice racing at around one mile, but stepped up to this trip at Sandown at the beginning of the month he ran well to finish a close third to Flying Frontier (reopposing Sir Busker just ahead of him) and his run in the John Smiths Cup may have come too soon just seven days on. He’s had a little longer to recover this time around, and he features off an attractive mark if able to recapture his best; he’s 5lbs below the mark from which he won this race two seasons ago and he ought to have the race run to suit. While his form figures of late do cause a little consternation that he perhaps isn’t at his best at present, he could be lit up by a return to this track and he has tended in the past to show his best form on undulating tracks so a big run wouldn’t come as a shock if returning to something akin to his best.

1:55 Goodwood – Coral Vintage Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (2yo) 7f

Unbeaten ZAVATERI (6/1) can make it a hat-trick of wins with Eve Johnson Houghton’s charge already a winner at this level. The Without Parole colt made a taking winning debut at Salisbury in June despite looking far from the finished article, rearing in the stalls but quickly overcoming inexperience to score readily. He stepped up markedly on that first outing to take the July Stakes at Newmarket a couple of weeks ago, beating Do Or Do Not and again looking green. Both those runs came over six furlongs, but he shapes as if he’ll improve for a step up in trip and this extra furlong could eke out further progress. He’s proven he can handle an undulating track, and although penalised her,e he could prove up to the task of giving away weight all round. With the potential for further still to come and with the longer trip and likely strong pace here, both sure to suit he can land a three-timer of victories. 2:30 Goodwood – HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (3yo+) 7f

The veteran KINROSS (10/3) likes it here, and the eight-year-old looked as good as ever when a shade unlucky not to win on his reappearance at Haydock in May when just beaten a head by Ten Bob Tony in the John Of Gaunt. Ralph Beckett’s charge has run in the last three renewals of this race, his record reading 213, and he often runs well on the back of a break so having had almost two months off since his Newbury reappearance, he should be spot on for this. Twelve months ago, he finished five lengths third behind Audience, who reopposes here, but he wasn’t seen to best effect off the back of a slow early pace. He should get more of a pace to aim at this time aroun,d and now 5lbs better off with his last-time Newbury conqueror, he can reverse that form. Two wins and two places here show he handles the track well and he ought to make his presence felt again in this race.

3:05 Goodwood – Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes (Group 1) Cl1 (3yo+) 2m

Ormonde Stakes winner ILLINOIS (11/10) perhaps didn’t get home over the longer trip of the Ascot Gold Cup, but over this lesser trip, Aidan O’Brien’s charge can quickly resume winning ways. The Galileo colt finished ahead of a couple of these at Ascot when beaten seven lengths by Trawlerman, finishing a similar distance ahead of Dubai Future, with Sweet William even further back and he ought to confirm that form with both of those on these terms. The 2024 Queens Vase winner also finished runner-up in last season’s St Leger, and while he possibly found stamina being stretched over 2m 4f at Ascot, he could be well-suited by this stiff two miles. With the potential to improve further, given he’s still quite lightly raced, he has proven ground versatile and he ought to be firmly in the mix once more as the choice of Ryan Moore from the Ballydoyle duo set to contest this race.

3:45 Goodwood – Coral Golden Rewards Shaker Handicap Cl2 (3yo+ 0-105) 5f

A hugely competitive handicap could go to course specialist ENCHANTING (14/1, EW), who boasts three wins from five starts here, and Andrew Balding’s charge can bounce back from a lesser ruin at Ayr last time. Andrew Balding’s yard is in better form now, and the Blue Point filly won over C&D on her seasonal reappearance back in May, running out a four-length victor over Cinque Verde. She bombed out at Ayr next time in a Listed contest, failing to beat a rival having set the pace early, but she weakened quickly and may have been amiss that day. She’s been given time to get over that run and drops back into a handicap which could show her in a better light, although this mark still sets her a stiff task. Softer ground would be a plus, so the current forecast conditions are a slight worry, although she did win on similar ground on her reappearance and if bouncing back from that lesser effort last time, she could make the frame under Hollie Doyle.

4:20 Goodwood – British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes (IRE Incentive Race) (Colts & Geldings) Cl2 (2yo) 6f

STELLAR SUNRISE (13/2) found only one too good here on his debut back in May when beaten just over one length by Goldwork, and while Andrew Balding’s charge finished one place worse off on his next outing at York, he showed some improved form behind Egoli. The Space Blues colt finished third there, slowly away but finishing off well from the rear, and there’s a bigger performance to come from the Balding runner who can continue to improve. That York third has been franked by the winner going in again, and he ought to be competitive again returning to this track, which he handled well on debut. He has shown enough in his two starts to date to suggest he’s very capable of winning a race such as this and there’d be no shock in seeing him going close. 4:55 Goodwood – Ridgeview Fillies’ Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-95) 1m

PROTEST (5/1) drops into a handicap for the first time and Roger Varian’s charge can get back on the scoresheet for the first time since scoring on debut. The Ulysees filly was a Chelmsford scorer prior to posting a solid fourth in a Listed race at Newmarket on her only other start that campaign, and she showed up far better than her bare form figure suggests when sixth of nine here in May on her seasonal reappearance. She may have needed that run, setting the fractions in front before weakening in the last furlong in a race that is working out quite well, and ten furlongs may have stretched her when finishing fourth at Newbury latest in a Listed contest. She met with some trouble in running there, but that form again looks useful with the winner winning a French Group Two and the third a Listed race, so stepping into a handicap off a mark of 92 could well underestimate her. With the potential for better to come, she drops back to one mile, which will prove no issu,e and a big run could be on the cards.

5:30 Goodwood – World Pool Bet With The Tote EBF Fillies’ Handicap Cl3 (3yo+ 0-95) 6f

SEA EMILY RUN (11/2) could be the answer to a tricky finale on day one of Glorious Goodwood, and the Too Darn Hot filly comes into the race on the back of a victory last time out at Chester. Tom Clover’s charge ran here twice in four campaign starts last term, winning over C&D in August when beating Mollie Foster before posting a very creditable fourth in a Newmarket Listed contest. Better for her reappearance fifth at Doncaster in April, she got the verdict on the nod at Chester latest, beating Lady Of Andros, which represents some solid form. The runner-up subsequently went close in a pair of valuable handicaps at York and Newmarket, and she’s only up 3lbs for that victory, which may prove lenient given she likely has more to offer. Back at this venue, which she’s proven capable at, she can continue to give a good account of herself, and there’d be no shock to see her firmly in the mix again here.
