2:30 Royal Ascot

The opener on Day 1 is the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes over the famous straight mile at Ascot.

I think ROSALLION (5/2) is the one here. 2 from 2 here at Ascot, including the Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes last year, he was the best 3-year-old of the crop last season and looks set to continue on that upward trajectory. After a setback he returned to action in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes against several of these and finished a good third, travelling well but just tiring late on. I expect he’ll come on a bundle for that, and if he doesn’t, he’s the one they have to beat. He’ll be well suited by the quick ground and he can use his potent turn of foot to get back in the winners enclosure.

3:05 Royal Ascot

The first 2 year-old race is the Group 2 Coventry Stakes over 6f.

The horse I like is ANDAB (12/1). An impressive winner at the Curragh on debut, he was pitched into Group 3 last time out back there and came third behind the impressive Albert Einstein. He travelled strongly into that contest and just couldn’t quite quicken as well as the winner. However, he had a small setback, and connections were keen to get that run into him to set him up for this. I like his high draw, and this strong traveller will relish the pace they go here.

3:40 Royal Ascot

Next up is the King Charles III Stakes. A Group 1 for the sprinters over 5 furlongs.

It is AMERICAN AFFAIR (16/1) for me in this. He’s on a serious upward curve and he’ll be well suited by this stiff 5f of Ascot with a strong pace to aim at. A winner of his first two starts this season, things didn’t go to plan in the Group 2 Temple Stakes last time out, but he still shaped well enough. He comes here at the top of his game, and stall 16 looks a nice spot. The stands rail is often favoured and there is plenty of pace around him, which will suit.

5:00 Royal Ascot

The 5:00 race is the competitive Ascot Stakes over 2m4f.

Willie Mullins targets this race, and his Royal runner REACHING HIGH (7/2) will relish this test. The son of Gold Cup winner Estimate, this step up to 2m4f will bring out further improvement. His stable debut at Leopardstown last time out was full of encouragement. He stayed on strongly to go down by a short head over 1m4f. Ryan Moore now takes over, and I expect a bold bid. Stall 1 should allow him to gain a nice early position, given he has speed too.
