1:50 York
The first race on Day 3 of York is a competitive handicap over the 1m4f trip.
I like MR MONACO (6/1) in this who’s a progressive 3 year-olds taken on a lot of exposed rivals. He’s been improving steadily and put up a career-best effort last time out when making all at Sandown to win cosily. He seemed to enjoy making the running and as we’ve previously touched on, that is where you want to be here at York. I think this step up to 1m4f will bring out further improvement and I believe a mark of 94 is well within his reach.
2:25 York
The 2:25 is the Lonsdale Cup, a Grouo 2 for the stayers over the extended 2 mile trip.
I am going to give GREGORY (9/2) another chance here. He was a progressive 3 year-old last season which included a decisive victory in the Queens Vase at Royal Ascot. He always looked like he’d improve as he got older but this season hasn’t quite gone to plan as of yet. He made an encouraging seasonal return when third in the Yorkshire Cup suggesting a big season could await. He then went to Royal Ascot and ran a stinker in the Gold Cup. I’m happy to forgive that effort and he bounced back to a decent level of form last time out when third in the Goodwood Cup. This is a weaker race and I think we’ll see a big performance from him soon, hopefully, today is that day.
3:00 York
The 3:00 is the Gimcrack Stakes, a Group 2 for 2 year-olds over 6f.
It is ANDESITE (13/2) NB for me here for the Karl Burke yard. We know they excel with their 2 year-old colts and this son of Pinatubo was an impressive winner on debut over this course and distance. The front two pulled clear of the remainder of the field there and the performance was backed up by the clock. He’s entitled to improve again here and I like his chances.
3:35 York
The feature on Friday is the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes over the minimum 5 furlongs.
It is ASFOORA (2/1) NAP for me here. The Aussie sprinter was a great winner of the Group 1 Kings Stand Stakes at the Royal meeting earlier in the season after a satisfactory return to action in the Temple Stakes. He ran another cracker at Goodwood when second to the re-opposing Big Evs. Hes now better off at the weights and this track will suit him more. Big Evs has previously disappointed here in the Nunthorpe at York which is an obvious concern. Asfoora will get a lovely toe into this and I’d expect him to go by the lot just like he did at Royal Ascot.
4:10 York
The 4:10 race is a fillies handicap contest over an extended 1m2f.
The one for is REACH (15/2) here. A winner of this contest last year, I expect connections will have been targeting a repeat bid this time round. She has run twice which will have put her spot on for it. Her third-placed effort last time out in a competitive course and distance handicap was a fine effort suggesting she’s as good as ever. She has to go close for me off a mark of 87.
