1:50 Newmarket

The first of four live races from Newmarket comes up at 1:50 and it is a trappy handicap over 1m6f. The one I like in here is CEMHAAN (8/1) NB. He’s a course and distance winner at a similar time last year and he arrives here with his stable in arguably the best form they’ve ever been in. The George Baker stable can’t do a lot wrong at present and Kevin Stott is a decent jockey booking. He won first-time out last season and he’s proven on soft ground which could be important.

2:05 Hamilton

We have one race from Hamilton and it’s at 2:05. Another very competitive handicap, this time over 1m1f. I’d give ZIMMERMAN (7/1) NAP a decent shout here. A progressive three-year old last season who landed a double at Catterick and Redcar before a mid-division finish at York to end his season. That may have came too quick and he made a really encouraging seasonal reappearance when finishing second at Thirsk last month. I think he can continue to improve this season and he’ll do for me here.

2:25 Newmarket

The 2:25 contest is the Pretty Polly Stakes, a listed contest over 1m2f. I like RUNNING LION (10/3) here. She has fitness on his side as he won at Kempton last month in what looked a decent race on paper. She has an Oaks entry so this step up to 1m2f from the mile can hopefully bring out more improvement. Trainer John Gosden is a master with the fillies and I think he could have another good one on his hands here.

2:40 Salisbury

We head to Salisbury for one race and it’s the competitive City Bowl Handicap over 1m6f. The one for me is MOTHILL (7/1). Neil Mulholland is in good form and he’s having a few winners on the level as well which is encouraging for the selection here. He is a decent hurdler and I think a mark of 82 is more than fair based on his talent. I’ll chance him here.

3:00 Newmarket

It’s Group 2 action next up as we have the Dahlia Stakes over the 1m1f trip. I like VIA SISTINA (11/2) here. The rain on Saturday will definitely be in her favour. She won a Group 3 in France on her last start in a November over in France. She has a win and a second from two visits to Newmarket and I think she can continue to improve on just her third start for George Boughey.

3:40 Newmarket

Again, the feature race closes proceedings on ITV with the Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes over the mile. A wide open renewal and I’ll chance CAERNARFON (50/1) EW. A really hardy 2-year old, she ended her campaign with a decent victory here at Newmarket over the mile. She’s one of a small selection that’s proven on both the trip and with cut on the ground given that victory came on soft. She’ll be held up off the strong pace and I think the stiff finish will see her finishing stronger than most. She’s drawn on the right side of the track in stall 3 and hopefully she can run into a place at least.
