The opener to a fantastic week, the Greatest Show On Turf, the Supreme Novices Hurdle. A Grade 1 contest over the 2m trip and it looks set to be one of the most fascinating races of the week. The one I like is CONSTITUTION HILL (5/2). Easily the most solid horse in the line-up, he will have no problems with the preliminaries which has to be a concern for market rivals Dysart Dynamo and Jonbon. He was so professional in both starts at Sandown this season, travelling powerfully, jumping well and showing a potent turn of foot to power up the Sandown hill on both occasions. I don’t think the quicker ground here will be a problem and he’ll be able to sit off the strong pace and make his move as they swing for home. His jumping will be an asset and I think he’s a strong stayer at this trip which is a huge plus.[akurai_table reviews=”7169″ terms=”long” lazy_logo=”true”]
3:30 Cheltenham
The feature on Day 1 comes up at 3:30, the Grade 1 Unibet Champion Hurdle ran over the 2m distance. I actually think HONEYSUCKLE (4/6) is a good bet here and I can see her drifting on the day. She is the best horse in the race and has never lost. Also, she gets weight of all her rivals with the mares allowance. Appreciate It hasn’t ran for a year and his victory in the Supreme Novices Hurdle hasn’t worked out too good, albeit he hosed up. He still has to step up significantly and I just don’t think the rest are good enough. Honeysuckle can get punters off to a flyer in the feature on Day 1.4:10 Cheltenham
The 4:10 comes up next and it is yet another Grade 1 for us to get stuck into. The Mares Hurdle ran over 2m4f and it’s a wide open betting market. The nap of the day is TELLMESOMETHINGGIRL NAP (3/1). She’s been laid out for this all season and connections have always said this was the number one target and they’d be working backwards from it. She has improved with every start this season and the form of her latest effort when staying on behind Stayers Hurdle hopeful Royal Kahala was a good effort. She’ll improve again for that and she now returns to the scene of his finest hour. 5:30 Cheltenham
The finale on Day 1 is the Ukraine Appeal National Hunt Chase ran over the 3m6f trip. Seven runners go to post and arguably, they all have a realistic chance. My selection is RUN WILD FRED NB (9/4). He has strong form and is the mount of Jamie Codd so it’s easy to see why he’s favourite in the finale. A great winner of the competitive Troytown at Navan back in November on decent ground, he’s followed that up with a fine second-placed effort at Grade 1 level last time out. He’ll be well suited to this type of rest and there is no stamina concerns.
