Glorious Goodwood Day 2 Tips – Wednesday 28th July 2021

Described by Aidan O’Brien as ‘the ultimate test of a miler’, the Group 1 Qatar Sussex Stakes is the highlight of a five-race televised card on Wednesday. We’ve pored over the form book and identified a handful of selections that should give us a decent run for our money.

1:50 Unibet “15 To Go” Handicap

Siskany was impressive when winning over 1 mile 2 furlongs, on soft going, at Sandown on his penultimate start and again ran well, off a 10lb higher mark, when a close fourth in the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot. That was his first attempt over 1 mile 4 furlongs and just his fifth race in all, so he remains open to significant improvement. A 2lb rise in the weights for his latest effort seems entirely fair and he looks a smart middle-distance performer in the making. Selection: Siskany (5/1 with Betfred)

2:25 Whispering Angel Oak Tree Stakes

A winner over 7 furlongs for John Feane at Naas last August, Bounce The Blues has yet to win a race, of any description, for her new connections, but has a pretty solid profile in Listed and Pattern races. Arguably her best effort yet again came over 7 furlongs, on soft going, at Lingfield on her penultimate start, so she has underfoot conditions to suit. She may be capable of opening her account on this side of the Irish Sea. Selection: Bounce The Blues (10/1 with Bet365)

3:00 Markel Molecomb Stakes

Rain may have scuppered the chance of Chipotle, who was 3-3 on good or faster going heading into the Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes at Newbury earlier this month, but lost all chance when repeatedly denied a clear run in the closing stages. Consequently, Fearby, who was an easy winner on good to soft going at Sandown last time, looks the one to beat. Selection: Fearby (5/2 with Bet365) [single_affiliate_freespins id=”1679″ ]

3:35 Qatar Sussex Stakes

Andrew Balding, trainer of Alcohol Free, is of the opinion that the No Nay Never filly is ‘as good as there is in that division’ but, even in receipt of 3lb fillies’ allowance, she faces her acid test against a colt of the calibre of Poetic Flare. The latter was mightily impressive when confirming his 2,000 Guineas form with Lucky Vega in the St. James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and fully deserves his position at the head of the market. On the prevailing going, looking beyond him may be a futile exercise. Selection: Poetic Flare (5/6 with Bet365)

4:10 British Stallion Studs Alice Keppel EBF Fillies’ Conditions Stakes

Vertiginous was having just her second start when belying odds of 66/1 to finish fifth of 21, beaten 4 ¾ lengths, in the Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot. She’s bred to be a top-class sprinter, so must have every chance of opening her account in this lower grade, for all that she faces completely different underfoot conditions this time. Selection: Vertiginous (6/1 with Paddy Power)
