ITV Racing Tips for Thursday 8th July from Newmarket’s July Meeting and Carlisle

The Newmarket July meeting gets underway on Thursday and ITV will be bringing us four races from HQ and a race from Carlisle. You can see our preview and betting tips for each of the five races below.

1:50 Newmarket

The first race comes up at 1:50 and it is a Group 3 contest over the 1m5f trip known as the Bahrain Trophy Stakes. Six 3 year-olds are set to go to post. The one I like is STOWELL NB. Very well known for his debut effort when finishing second under an extremely patient ride from Rob Havlin he come forward and won on his next start at Ascot. He then stepped up into Group 2 company at Royal Ascot on his last start where he finished a good third. He was held up off the pace that day and the first two day prominent to the pace so I’m happy to mark that performance up. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Stowell yet and I think he can step up again here.

2:05 Carlisle

The 2:05 race from Carlisle is a fillies handicap over 5f. The one for me here is TWIST OF HAY. A very uncompetitive affair and I’m happy to chance one at a price here. The Michael Dods team are in decent nick at the moment and I think it’s eye-catching that the horse has had wind surgery since his low key comeback effort last in May. Back in September 2020, he won well after having wind surgery and hopefully lightning can strike twice here.

2:25 Newmarket

Group 2 action is next up at Newmarket and it is the July Stakes over 6f for the 2 year-olds. I like ELDRICKJONES here. He was very unlucky not to win the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out. He was drawn on the wrong side that day and met trouble in running which proved to be significant as he just failed to get up. I think compensation awaits here and I think this stiff finish over 6f will suit him well.

3:00 Newmarket

The 3:00 race is a decent handicap for us to get stuck into. It’s a 6f sprint with 20 runners set to go to post. There likely to go a strong gallop here and I expect the winner to come from off the pace. I like JUMBY NAP here. I think he is a very good horse and I’m happy to forgive his effort last time out in Group 1 company as the heavy ground won’t have suited at all. He returned to fast ground here and he has strong form over 6f. He is a horse that likes to be held up so this race sets up perfectly for him. I think Jumby is better than a handicapper and I believe he is a great bet in this race.

3:35 Newmarket

The finale on Day 1 of the July Cup Meeting is the Princess of Wales Stakes, a Group 2 contest over 1m4f. I believe AL AASY will take the world of beating in this. He’s a horse that has improved significantly this year and is unlucky not to have won all three starts. He won his first two races this season in a canter before losing a head bobber in the Group 1 Coronation Cup where he was just touched off by Pyledriver. They pulled 7l clear of the third that day and I still think that was a great effort. He now returns to Group 2 company and the fast ground will suit him well. He will take an awful lot of beating here in my book.
